Oxfam Assists Sri Lankans Following Devastating Landslides

As Senior Area Manager of deVere USA, Inc., Benjamin Alderson helps clients with investment, insurance, and retirement planning. Outside of his activities at deVere, Benjamin Alderson gives back to his community by supporting nonprofit organizations such as Oxfam International.

Oxfam International has been working in Sri Lanka recently to assist some of the nearly 425,000 people who were affected by heavy rains that caused floods and landslides throughout the central region of the country. Early monsoons in mid-May prompted the landslides, which completely buried three villages.

In the days immediately following the landslides, Oxfam began working with its partners in Sri Lanka to distribute household items, set up portable latrines, and establish temporary shelter in five districts of the country. As flood waters recede and people return to their homes, Oxfam is focusing on providing financial support to families who have lost much-needed crops and income.

In its efforts to reach a minimum of 17,500 affected Sri Lankans, Oxfam will also be working with government agencies to help those whose homes were destroyed to find a new place to live. For more information, or to support the recovery efforts, visit www.oxfam.org.
